AHCMOM213 Operate and maintain chainsaws

Course Currency Status: (Release 2) Current

Course Overview: The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to maintain a chainsaw in a working condition and safely operate a chainsaw in accordance with WHS requirements, including the application of low risk work procedures and safe cutting techniques to carry out routine work and cross-cut fallen timber.

Target Audience: Individuals who are required to operate and maintain chainsaws in the workplace or community settings to cut fallen timber using low risk work procedures.

Entry requirements/ What to Bring:

Participants must supply:

  • White Card (Construction Safety Induction Card)
  • Steel Capped Boots/ Safety Footwear
  • USI Number

Delivery Mode: This course may be delivered by face to face delivery or blended learning

Duration: 8 hours face to face

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course learners will display the ability to:

  • Determine and clarify site location for work and work details with your supervisor
  • Identify site hazards, assess risks and report to supervisor
  • Apply hazard and risk assessment and implement controls for chainsaw use
  • Use appropriate tools to perform routine checks and maintenance for chainsaw usage according to operation and maintenance manual chainsaw routine checks and maintenance according to operation and maintenance manual, including:
    • checking and adjusting bar and chain sharpening
    • cleaning air filter
    • cleaning and replacing spark plug
  • Identify, tag and report chainsaw faults and malfunctions
  • Use personal protective equipment that complies with Australian Standards
  • Follow workplace procedures relevant to safely operate a chainsaw to cross-cut fallen timber using compression and tension cuts with a hand held chainsaw
  • Apply environmentally responsible workplace practices
  • Apply low risk work practices including stopping, disengaging quickly and dealing with foreign matter
  • Clean and store a chainsaw

Knowledge Evidence: Students must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform chainsaw maintenance and operational tasks and be able to demonstrate the principles and practice for operating chainsaw, conducting routine checks and maintenance according to chainsaw operation and maintenance manuals, including:

  • Checking and adjusting the chain bar
  • Cleaning the air filter
  • Cleaning and/or replacing spark plug
  • Sharpening the saw chain
  • Demonstration of safe operating procedures
  • Identification of hazards and risks when operating a chainsaw
  • Identification of the relevant Australian Standards concerning chainsaw operation including use of personal protective equipment
  • Identify and locate components of chainsaws and describe their respective functions
  • understand common defects in woody materials
  • Demonstrate cutting methods and techniques, patterns and sequence of cuts
  • Identification of health and safety in the workplace requirements for the operation of a chainsaw including caution and hazard signs and symbols
  • Understand the environmental impacts associated with operating chainsaws.

Assessment: Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations.

On Completion: Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded with a Statement of Attainment in AHCMOM213 Operate and maintain chainsaws
